Non-toxic deodorant alternatives

This past year Seth and I have discovered some GREAT deodorant alternatives. Most deodorants contain aluminum, plus other harsh ingredients that I sure as heck don't want to be applying to my freshly shaved underarm skin right next to some serious lymph nodes. Ingredients to avoid when searching for a safe deodorant...
  • Aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly or any aluminum compounds. 
  • Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl and butyl)
  • Triclosan
  • Talc
  • Propylene glycol
  • Silica
  • Steareth-n
I stopped using conventional deodorant about 3 years ago and wasn't pleased with any of the stuff I found at health food stores. So I was thrilled when we stumbled on some very effective deodorants using products that we already had in our home.

Colloidal Silver - This is very effective. It is naturally antibacterial, so you can even apply it when you're  smelling funky and most of the time it will take the smell away since it's caused by bacteria. I buy my colloidal silver at Doorway to Health and apply it with a q-tip. It doesn't require much. A bottle usually lasts me 6 months. I really want to start making my own colloidal silver... Coconut oil - I love coconut oil. It has so many uses. This is a staple in our home. Not only does it keep you from getting stinky, but it moisturizes and soothes your underarms. Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral. Pretty easy to apply, just rub it on. Sometimes I'll rub coconut oil on and apply baking soda afterwards for an extra boost.

Baking Soda - This is Seth's favorite. He recommends putting it on right after you shower. Put some in the palm of your hand and rub it under your arms and over your chest. Not my fave, but the men I know that use it, really like it.


Mineral Salts Stone -This one is my most recent discovery and most used right now. A friend bought it for me and I love it! It works great and will probably last me close to a year. You get it wet and apply it onto CLEAN armpits otherwise it won't work and it makes your mineral salt stone stinky. :-(

Try some of these out! They are so much safer and in my experience, so much more effective than the usual deodorants you buy at the store. Honestly, I am not one of those people, like my mom, who can walk around all day without deodorant on and smell just fine. It is a must have. It is such a relief to know that when I put one of these on, it is actually going to work throughout the day and not just for 30 minutes. Smell ya later! :)

Saying Goodbye to Judah

On January 20, 2020 at 7:15am, I said goodbye to my youngest child, my “forever” baby, my Judah. Seth woke me up by gently shaking my shoulder. I startled awake as he tearfully said, “I think he’s about to go.” I couldn’t believe it. How did it happen so quickly, why didn’t he wake me up earlier?? Seth said that his color changed almost instantly and his breathing drastically slowed while he was holding him in the living room while I got a few hours of sleep. 38 Years Young

My goal for my 38th year is to quiet the negative self talk and begin to embrace my gifts and my strengths instead of focusing on my weaknesses. With that thought, I decided to write myself a reminder using the same grace I would with a friend. Happy birthday Elizabeth! I know it is so hard to believe that you are 38 years old. Last year was tough, but in the midst of all the trials you saw so much beauty from ashes. You grew in your faith and your roots deepened as you saw God come through time after time with unfailing faithfulness. I think it is fair to admit that life is difficult right now, considering all of the needs of your 8 children. It would be difficult to manage a family that size without one of them being terminally ill and another with severe attachment issues. You really are doing a good job. Judah is 2!!

I've been trying to come up with adequate words to describe how I feel about Judah turning 2. I don't think it's possible, so I will share the thoughts that have been running through my head. Judah's birth mom was encouraged to abort him. He wasn't expected to make it through birth. He came to live with us at 6 weeks old after circumstances that no one could deny God's hand on. The first 9 months of his life were filled with anxiety, little sleep and lots of funeral planning. We almost lost him more times than I can count. When he was 9 months old, by the grace of God, a water pipe melted and prevented our house fire from spreading to his room. The room next to his was 400 degrees and full of smoke. He had no smoke inhalation or any issues afterwards at all. After that trial, I begged God for a break and to keep Judah healthy for awhile.
